What's Running Hot: The Topics That Drew The Most Interest In 2023

Every publisher knows (or should know) the topics that most engage readers. But the results might look slightly different on the macro level.

This year, readership grew in these subject areas, according to Readly, a magazine and newspaper app:

  • Business & Finance — 22%
  • Lifestyle — 18%
  • Food & Drink — 13%

In the Business & Finance area, particular interest was shown in tips related to personal finance.

Growth in lifestyle reading was driven by a seeming need to escape. Readership was drawn by stories like the coronation of King Charles III , Barbiemania and remembering departed celebrities like Tina Turner.

Readly does not mention Taylor Swift. But it does specify Margot Robbie.

As for Food & Drink, readers have been attracted by articles on plant-based recipes and budget-friendly home cooking.

Readly reports that 390,000 digital issues were read 160 million times on its platform in 2023.

Amid economic uncertainty, geopolitical unrest, and climate challenges, consumers turn to quality journalism for answers, guidance, and a moment of escape,” says Chris Couchman, head of content at Readly.

Couchman adds, “Paramount among concerns is the global economy, its implications on a personal level, and in parallel a longing for occasional detachment from the reality of challenges that have been apparent throughout 2023.”
