Vice's 'Garage' Hires Laia Garcia As Features Director

  • by May 31, 2019

Vice Media’s Garage magazine hired its first features director, Laia Garcia, as the biannual publication seeks to boost its fashion coverage.

Garcia previously worked as deputy editor of No Man’s Land, the internal magazine of The Wing, the global network of work and community spaces designed for women.

She also worked at Refinery 29, the digital media and entertainment company focused on young women, and the Lenny Letter, the feminist newsletter started by Lena Dunham and producer Jenni Konner. That newsletter, first run in partnership with Hearst, then Condé Nast, shut down in October.

Garage also promoted Gabriella Karefa-Johnson to fashion director, a role left open after Phoebe Arnold took a job at Elle U.K. early last year, WWD reported. Karefa-Johnson previously was style director and has worked at Garage since 2017.

Garage has a small editorial staff, with an online masthead that lists only about 10 people, led by editor in Chief Mark Guiducci. The publication operates a website separate from Vice Media’s main hub.

After years of operating with separately branded sites, like Munchies, Noisey and Motherboard,  Vice this month folded its content into Vice.com as feature sections. Its site now lists news, identity, entertainment, music, food, tech, games, health and drugs as sections. Its redesigned website also offers Vice Stories as a place for vertical video.
